Guide to Creating Scenic Byways
Wichita Mountains Byways

State-by-State Resources

Scenic byway designation is one of the most powerful tools available to Americans for preserving scenic landscapes. The byway designation process starts with concerned and active citizens who come together to protect a scenically valuable roadway. The process for achieving official designation is different for each state, but all have a few requirements in common.

A scenic byway candidate must demonstrate intrinsic value according to the state’s byways program criteria, it must have a byway managing organization, and it must have a corridor management plan which provides detailed information about what the route’s scenic assets are and how they will be protected.

Becoming a National Scenic Byway

In addition to protecting local scenic areas, the state byway programs play the crucial role of providing candidate roads for the National Scenic Byways Program. The national scenic byways are some of America’s premier travel and tourism destinations, and the nationally-designated roads each started as state scenic byways.
