Interstate I-70 and its Billboard Problem

Interstate 70, which traverses 250 miles from St Louis to Kansas City, is often called the “Main Street of Missouri”. It is part of a 2200-mile interstate route that has a significant footprint in nine states. But I-70 in Missouri has a special characteristic—it has more billboards per mile than any other state along the route. As can be seen in the chart below, Missouri boasts 3.64 billboards per mile along its I-70 corridor. This is 2.5 times the average of its adjacent neighbors. Missouri has a billboard problem. And the “Main Street of Missouri” presents a terribly unfair image of an otherwise beautiful state.

Challenging billboard blight and advocating for I-70 beautification are key strategic priorities of Scenic Missouri.
