Take action today to block obtrusive outdoor advertising in Hawaii
Senate committee hearing happens tomorrow
Two bills that would weaken Hawaii’s long-standing protections against outdoor advertising are scheduled for a Senate Committee hearing tomorrow. Lawmakers need to hear from you now.
SB 2074 would create a new exception for exterior commercial advertising on a state facility — using stadium naming rights as justification to introduce offsite advertising into Hawaii’s public landscape. This proposed legislation would set a precedent that could lead to broader erosion of the state’s protections.
SB 2353 would authorize digital outdoor advertising in Waikīkī and override local control, forcing counties to allow it. This would bring obtrusive signage into one of Hawaii’s most iconic places.
Together, these bills would open the door to increased commercialization and visual clutter across the islands.
Please send your message today urging the Senate Committee on Economic Development and Tourism and the Senate Committee on Government Operations to reject SB 2074 and SB 2353.
