Take action NOW — hearing in Hawaii House Water and Land Committee is today
Voice your objections to two bills that would open the door to obtrusive outdoor advertising in Honolulu
Last week, advocates across Hawaii spoke out against two bills that would weaken the state’s longstanding protections against outdoor advertising.
Unfortunately, those bills are now advancing — and will be heard today by the House Committee on Water and Land. Lawmakers need to hear from you right now.
SB 2074 would create a new exception for exterior commercial advertising on a state facility — using stadium naming rights as justification to introduce offsite advertising into Hawaii’s public landscape. Even if presented as limited, it would set a precedent for broader erosion of existing protections.
SB 2353 would authorize digital outdoor advertising in Waikīkī and override local control, forcing counties to allow it. This would introduce bright, changing signage into one of Hawaii’s most iconic and culturally significant places.
Together, these bills would open the door to increased commercialization and visual clutter across the islands.
Please send your message now urging the House Committee on Water and Land to reject SB 2074 and SB 2353.
