When an emergency unfolds, reliable communication can make all the difference. First responders need to connect quickly and clearly as they coordinate resources, share information and make decisions that protect lives.
In the Inlet Beach area, connectivity limitations have made that communication more difficult for years. As this part of Walton County continues to grow, addressing those gaps has become increasingly important.
The Walton County Sheriff’s Office is working to provide a long-term solution through its P25 Public Safety Communications Tower Project. The proposed 300-foot tower would strengthen emergency communications and help law enforcement, fire and emergency medical personnel better serve residents and visitors in eastern Walton County.
Scenic Walton supports this important public-safety investment and thanks the Sheriff’s Office, including Chief of Emergency Services Tracey Vause, for continuing to work toward a solution to this longstanding challenge.
At the same time, we believe the location of a structure this prominent deserves careful consideration.
The site currently under discussion is the fifth location proposed for the tower. It is located on land owned by the Florida Department of Transportation along U.S. Highway 98 near 30Avenue, one of the most visible gateways into Inlet Beach and the Scenic Highway 30A corridor.
That location places two important community priorities before us: improving emergency communications and protecting the scenic character of one of Walton County’s most recognizable entrances.
We believe there may be a way to accomplish both.
Why Scenic Placement Matters
Infrastructure is an essential part of a safe, growing community. So is thoughtful planning.
A 300-foot communications tower is not a temporary addition. Once constructed, it will become part of the community’s skyline for decades. Where it is placed will shape not only how it functions, but also how residents and visitors experience the surrounding area.
Inlet Beach serves as an introduction to a part of Walton County known for its natural beauty, thoughtful design and distinctive sense of place. The views, landscaping and overall character of this gateway help tell people they have arrived somewhere special.
Protecting that experience is at the heart of Scenic Walton’s mission.
Our concern is not with the tower itself or the vital purpose it will serve. Scenic Walton supports stronger emergency communications and wants to see this coverage issue resolved. We are simply asking whether another location could meet the Sheriff’s Office’s operational needs while reducing the tower’s visual impact near this important community gateway.
This is not an effort to delay needed progress. It is an effort to help shape that progress thoughtfully before a permanent decision is made.
Time to Explore an Alternative
The proposed use and occupancy agreement between Walton County and FDOT recently appeared on the Walton County Board of County Commissioners’ consent agenda. In collaboration with Scenic Walton, District 4 Commissioner Donna Johns pulled the item from the consent agenda, allowing time for further discussion and the consideration of another possible location.
We are grateful to Commissioner Johns for listening to the concerns surrounding the proposed site and for giving Scenic Walton and the community an opportunity to help find a solution.
Scenic Walton now has until September 22 to propose a viable alternate location.
We recognize that this is no small task. A suitable site must provide the coverage necessary to improve emergency communications. It must meet technical and operational requirements, offer appropriate access and allow the project to move forward without creating new obstacles.
Finding such a location within a limited timeframe will require cooperation, creativity and a shared commitment to the greater good.
Fortunately, that work is already underway.
Local community leaders and business owners have become active participants in the conversation, helping explore possibilities and supporting Scenic Walton’s mission to protect the beauty and character of the area. We are thankful for their willingness to engage constructively and help move the discussion toward a workable alternative.
Their involvement reflects the kind of community spirit that makes Walton County special. Rather than simply objecting to the current site, people are coming together to ask a more productive question: Where could this tower provide the public-safety benefits we need while being a better fit for the surrounding community?
Working Toward the Best Outcome
There may not be a perfect location, and there is no guarantee that every technical, logistical and visual consideration can be resolved. But a decision with this kind of lasting impact deserves a sincere effort to find the best possible balance.
That is what Scenic Walton will pursue with the help of the county and the community between now and September 22.
We will continue working with the Walton County Sheriff’s Office, county officials, Commissioner Johns, local business owners and community leaders to identify and evaluate potential alternatives. Throughout that process, we will remain mindful of the tower’s essential purpose and the communications needs it must fulfill.
The most meaningful progress happens when public safety, responsible growth and community character are considered together. Walton County should not have to sacrifice one of these priorities to advance another.
A stronger emergency communications system will better protect everyone who lives in, works in, or visits Inlet Beach. Finding the right location for that system will help ensure we strengthen public safety while continuing to preserve the scenic beauty that makes this community unlike anywhere else.
