Scenic America is proud to celebrate a major win for public lands and all who cherish them. On Saturday, June 28, Senator Mike Lee withdrew his proposal to sell off millions of acres of federal lands after it became clear that the measure lacked sufficient support in Congress. The proposal, which was included in the reconciliation bill, would have opened the door to the widespread sale of treasured landscapes, threatening access, conservation, and the natural beauty of countless public places across the country.
This reversal is the direct result of broad, bipartisan opposition and powerful advocacy from stakeholders, constituents, and conservation supporters nationwide. Americans made their voices heard, and lawmakers listened.
A growing number of Republicans—particularly from the West—joined with Democrats to oppose this dangerous provision. Senators from Montana and Idaho, along with Representatives Ryan Zinke (MT), Mike Simpson (ID), Dan Newhouse (WA), Cliff Bentz (OR), and David Valadao (CA), all deserve special recognition for taking a stand against this misguided attempt to sell off lands that belong to all Americans.
Their leadership reflects what we know to be true: public lands are deeply valued by people of all political stripes, especially in communities where access to outdoor spaces supports local economies, quality of life, and cultural identity. Selling off those lands not only undermines this value, it sets a dangerous precedent for the future. Public lands are not a commodity to be traded away. They are a legacy to be preserved.
We thank everyone who raised their voices, contacted their lawmakers, and helped spread the word. Your advocacy made this outcome possible. Scenic America remains committed to defending the scenic character, access, and ecological value of our public lands, and we’re proud to stand with you in that mission.
