Howard Gossage was an ad man in the 1950s and 1960s, a true advertising innovator and iconoclast during the “Mad Men” era. He was also a brilliant writer and a vocal critic of advertising’s deleterious impact on the public — including the public space. This famous article, from Harper’s, February 1960 issue, included a comment card to be mailed back to him asking the reader to vote whether there “ought or ought not to be billboards.”
