Why We Are Asking
Scenic Pittsburgh is a nonprofit organization that focuses on preserving scenic beauty and ensuring that everyone can benefit from a community’s scenic and historic assets. We have received a small grant from the Hunt Foundation to do some greenspace restoration in the Hill District neighborhood of Pittsburgh. We want to make sure this future space is useful to the community and helps meet people’s needs, so we are asking you and your neighbors to recommend a few possible sites we should focus on, and let us know what kind of greenspace you’d like to see in your neighborhood.
To give you an idea of what we are doing, we are also working on two greenspace restoration projects in the Northside.
- Fineview Greenspace Overlook – near Allegheny General Hospital, opening 2022
- Lanark Street Connector – near Allegheny Dwellings, also opening 2022
We want to thank you in advance for sharing your time and ideas with us.
A little about us and greenspace restoration.
We’ve been working to fight blight and billboards since 2010, and over the last few years we have also done greenspace restoration projects. We have two projects going on right now in the Fineview neighborhood, and we expect to open them to the public this summer.
We focus on quickly restoring sites so that people can enjoy the space safely, and so that they are a community asset rather than a source of blight. We mainly do 3 things:
- Clean up trash and dumps
- Tame vegetation
- Install paths
How You Can Help
- Identify sites you think would be good greenspaces
- Share your ideas about what you’d like to see there
- Volunteer to help us clean the lot and/or maintain it
What Kind of Sites We Look For
We are looking for single vacant lots with scenic potential, owned either by the City or URA (Urban Redevelopment Authority), or owned by a resident who would agree to having a community greenspace on their property. Multiple lots could work depending on their location and ownership.
