Scenic Scrapbook
Scenic Scrapbook is a collection of photos from across America that visually capture what is happening -- both good and bad -- to our landscapes, neighborhoods, and roadways. Our cities are being swallowed alive by enormous signs often so big that holes have to be cut into them to allow light into the buildings they cover, and our small towns are being decorated with towering telecommunications facilities. Help us document the American landscape in your community. To contribute to the Scenic Scrapbook, send a photo and a brief description of what you've seen to ashburn@scenic.org. Click on images to enlarge them.If only we could... This photo was snapped recently by Scenic America board member Bill Brinton in Florida.
Talk About a Mixed Message Ann Harter submitted this photo taken in Knoxville, TN. It speaks for itself.
A Bad Joke In Florida This photo, snapped by Scenic America Board Treasurer Bill Jonson in Florida, is an attempt by the advertiser to be cute but in reality is a rather overt acknowledgement that driver safety would be increased with more eyes on the road, and not on enormous billboards lining the highways.
A Tree Over Vancouver
Part of Vancouver's distinctive nature is its incorporation of nature into urban spaces. This high-rise near the sea front exemplifies the city's love of green space by prominently displaying a growing tree on its rooftop. Is it safe to roll your eyes while driving? Another shot from Knoxville, TN courtesy of Ann Harter. You have to wonder if they ever stopped to ask themselves about the juxtaposition of these two billboards as they were being put up...
Irony in Cleveland Scenic America board member Bill Brinton snapped this photo of an LED billboard while in Cleveland recently. The irony is that Bill was there to attend a conference of the National Alliance of Highway Beautification Agencies...who were being welcomed to Cleveland by a giant billboard!
Sunset on the English Bay
Brad Cownover snapped a sunset photo from a running path that borders the English Bay in Vancouver, BC. Sign of the Times ![]() Anna Cancel sent in several photos documenting the change that has taken place in her neighborhood over the past few years. Views now include billboards towering over homes.
